Certificate Course on Coconut Cultivation and Value-Added Products – 2025

The second session of the Certificate Course on Coconut Cultivation and Value-Added Coconut Products was successfully held at the Ratmalagara Research Center of the Coconut Research Institute. The program, designed for coconut growers and enthusiasts, included practical demonstrations to enhance technical knowledge, estate management, labor laws, and value addition in coconut products.

Officers of major plantation companies, university students, and growers participated in this event. The event was organised by Dr. Chaminda Herath, Head – Technology Transfer Division, and officers of the Technology Transfer Division, with the support of Mr.Ramal Wijegunawardana (Superintendent) and other officers at Rathmalagara Research Centre. Prof. Ajith Jayaweera, Chairman, Coconut Research Board also participated in this event.

Commencement of Duties for 2025 at the Coconut Research Institute

The Coconut Research Institute formally commenced its activities for the year 2025 on 1st January 2025 with a ceremonial gathering held at the Ambasewana premises and auditorium.

The event began with the observance of a two-minute silence to honor the valiant war heroes and all those who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of the nation. Following this, the officers of the Coconut Research Institute collectively took the Clean Sri Lanka Citizen Pledge, aligning with the national initiative “Clean Sri Lanka”, launched by the Presidential Secretariat.

The gathering was addressed by the Chairman of the Coconut Research Board, Professor Ajith Jayaweera, and the Acting Director of the Institute, Dr. Nayani Arachchige, who provided valuable insights and guidance for the year ahead.

The ceremony was attended by the Chairman, the Acting Director, and all officers of the Institute, reflecting a unified commitment to the national priorities and institutional goals for the upcoming year.

The Coconut Research Institute looks forward to a year of continued dedication to research excellence and national service.

Professor Ajith Jayaweera assumed the role of Chairman at the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka

Professor Ajith Jayaweera assumed the role of Chairman at the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka, bringing over 25 years of academic and research expertise to the position. As a professor in the Department of Animal Science and Nutrition at the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Prof. Jayaweera is widely recognized for his contributions to both higher education and research in Sri Lanka. He has served as a visiting lecturer at several leading Sri Lankan universities and pioneered the development of a Higher Diploma Program in Teaching Methodology for school educators. Prof. Jayaweera has earned international recognition for his contributions to higher education, including accreditation as a Senior Teacher in Higher Education by the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA), UK, in 2017.
Prof. Jayaweera has authored over 90 peer-reviewed research papers and 21 books focused on higher education, teaching methodology, and agricultural sciences. Prof. Jayaweera is also the developer of innovative software tools for animal feed formulation, widely used by feed producers across Sri Lanka. He has also served as the President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Section B (Agriculture and Forestry). His extensive experience and vision will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and innovation at the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka.

The 60th Session and Ministerial Meeting of the International Coconut Community (ICC) was held at the Hilton Hotel, Colombo from 25 to 27 November 2024 with the participation of Ministers and delegates from 21 member countries and representatives of international partner and observer organizations. The delegates of this meeting visited the Coconut Research Institute on 28th November 2024. For these delegates, an exhibition was held at the Coconut Research Institute with the participation of sister organizations, Coconut Cultivation Board, Coconut Development Authority, Chilaw Plantations Ltd and Kurunegala Plantations Ltd to showcase the role of these organizations in the coconut sector.
